Mammalian cell culture
Mammalian cell culture is the growth of animal cells outside the body under carefully controlled laboratory conditions. It is a cornerstone of modern life sciences and biomanufacturing, enabling research, drug discovery, vaccine development, and the production of therapeutic proteins. Because mammalian cells share many biological features with human cells, they are especially valuable for studying disease mechanisms and evaluating the safety and effectiveness of new treatments.
Successful mammalian cell culture depends on maintaining the right environment for cells to grow and function. Key factors include temperature, pH, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, nutrient supply, and sterility. Cells are typically grown in specialized media that provide amino acids, vitamins, salts, glucose, and growth factors. Depending on the application, cultures may be grown in flasks, plates, bioreactors, or other vessels designed to support either adherent or suspension cells.
One of the main advantages of mammalian cell culture is its ability to produce complex biological products with human-like modifications, such as proper protein folding and glycosylation. This is critical for many biologics, including monoclonal antibodies, hormones, and recombinant proteins. In research settings, cell culture also supports gene expression studies, toxicity testing, stem cell research, and personalized medicine approaches.
However, mammalian cell culture is highly sensitive to variation. Small changes in media composition, feeding strategy, incubation conditions, or handling practices can affect cell growth, viability, and product quality. Contamination is another major concern, making aseptic technique and robust monitoring essential. For this reason, laboratories and manufacturing facilities rely on standardized workflows, detailed documentation, and tight process control to ensure reproducible results.
As cell-based therapies and biologics continue to expand, the importance of efficient, scalable, and data-driven mammalian cell culture is growing. Organizations that can monitor process performance, maintain consistency, and capture knowledge across experiments are better positioned to improve yield, reduce risk, and accelerate innovation.
From discovery research to commercial production, mammalian cell culture remains a vital platform for advancing science and delivering next-generation healthcare solutions.
Mammalian cell cultures generate large volumes of process and analytical data across expansion, bioreactor, and harvest steps—data that’s still too often captured in spreadsheets.
