How do you navigate GxP compliance?
By Jim Brooks, Lead Platform Product Manager for GxP Strategy, IDBS
The United States FDA (Food and Drug Administration) issues guidelines to ensure the quality, safety and effectiveness of new drugs. In 2024 the US FDA issued 190 warning letters to drug and biologic manufacturers, more than double that of the previous year.[i]
Complying with regulatory guidelines such as those set out by the FDA can be an administrative burden, especially with the added pressure that non-compliance could result in costly and damaging regulatory warnings, product recalls and / or legal actions.
How can you achieve GxP compliance with confidence? Continue to read this blog for top tips.
How do you ensure the accuracy, consistency and security of data across different stages of your workflows?
The FDA’s Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) regulations emphasize the importance of accurate and reliable data that is readily available.[ii] Managing large volumes of complex data across unconnected or partially integrated data management systems hinders data integrity, consistency and real-time access.
By centralizing data management in a single digital platform, it is possible to ensure data accuracy and security throughout the product and process lifecycle. Platforms that offer comprehensive audit trails, real-time monitoring and automated data validation not only ensure complete data traceability but also enhance data quality – both of which are essential for supporting rigorous quality assurance (QA) processes.
How do you manage and maintain compliance in line with evolving regulatory requirements?
Maintaining GxP compliance and being inspection-ready can be challenging due to inconsistent data practices and decentralized or partially integrated records, especially when business requirements and strategic plans for the data generated can change to address industry trends and technological advances.
Implementing quality systems with comprehensive documentation, electronic signatures and secure data storage can help you meet complex regulatory requirements and stay inspection-ready, reducing the risk of non-compliance. Systems like IDBS Polar that provide these features can help scientists reduce their time on compliance activities by 60%.[iii]
At IDBS, we are conscious of the pressures of keeping pace with current regulatory best practices and understanding how to apply them appropriately. That’s why we set up the GxP Guild: an internal cross-functional team, comprising members from engineering, product and customer support, that meets bi-weekly to discuss how IDBS can respond to new compliance challenges and quickly bring those to market.
How to optimize operational efficiency with electronic systems?
Manual intervention in routine QA tasks slows processes and increases the risk of human error. As the entire drug development process, including QA activities, can take 10-15 years, it’s crucial that BioPharma companies work to streamline these operations by automating where possible.[iv]
Digital platforms improve workflow efficiency through the advanced automation of complex QA tasks, with systems like IDBS Polar which can reduce QA time by 75%.[v] Real-time data analysis, reporting and predictive analytics provide actionable insights which allow QA teams to proactively address potential issues before they impact operations, reducing bottlenecks and enhancing productivity.
What is the key to continuous improvement?
In a recent market survey conducted by the Pistoia Alliance, 59% of BioPharma professionals agreed that data silos are the greatest barrier preventing organizations from making the most of experimental data.[vi] Siloed data and ineffective communication channels significantly hinder cross-functional collaboration and slow down decision-making.
To overcome these barriers, organizations need systems that provide fast, easy access to historical data and are designed to embed best practices and insights through product and process reports. Platforms that enable real-time data sharing and collaborative review processes not only break down silos but also ensure that all teams are working from the same data foundation – promoting alignment with QA objectives and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
