Making CMC data Generative-AI ready: unlock the power of AI for smarter BioPharma decisions
The BioPharma industry is rapidly embracing digital transformation, with data-driven decision-making at its core. Generative AI (GenAI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) are becoming strategic priorities for accelerating the development of life-changing therapies. However, leveraging these technologies effectively requires high-quality, structured data, especially in Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC) workflows.
Generative AI creates new content by predicting patterns in large datasets, while LLMs like GPT-4 specialize in understanding and generating text. These technologies can assist in tasks such as literature summarization, regulatory documentation, and process optimization – however with challenges, like high costs and the generic nature of LLMs, fine-tuning is essential.

Marc Smith, Lead Product Manager – Process Development
Marc is a lead product manager for process development at IDBS. Before that role, he was a director of strategic solutions, developing the enterprise-level IDBS Polar BioPharma Lifecycle Management solutions. Marc is an expert in laboratory and operational technology, laboratory informatics and system integration and leads a team of technological and domain experts committed to developing Polar solutions.
He has over 15 years of experience working in the pharmaceutical sector implementing and leading digital solutions and strategies. Before joining IDBS in 2021, he worked at Lonza Biologics and Angel Biotechnology. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology from the University of Sunderland.
